Border Collies:  Brains Before Beauty

Border Collies were first bred in the early 1800's for herding livestock and to this day, the breed still retains its strong instinct to herd.  They are a high-energy breed that requires daily physical and mental stimulation to prevent them from becoming bored.  If bored, Border Collies will find other ways to meet their needs in forms of digging, barking, chewing, or herding young children or other moving objects, including shadows, insects, cats, etc.  This breed is not for everyone, and unless you are willing to meet all of their needs daily, then I do not recommend aquiring a Border Collie.

Border Collies are a very intelligent breed (most having the equivalent intelligence of the average five year old human), their repertoire of tricks being limited only by the imagination of the trainer.  They perform exceptionally well in agility competitions, as well as in other canine sports including obedience, flyball, herding, canine freestyle, rally-o, and disc dog, to name a few.  The breed is very loyal to its human, and they are never too tired to perform a task or learn something new.
