Bengals: Beauty in the Beast

The first Bengal breeding program was established in the 1980’s, whence breeders tried to create a domestic cat with a leopard-like coat by crossing domestic cats with the wild Asian Leopard Cat (ALC).  Initially the ALCs were bred with non-pedigrees or moggies, but after the spotted coat appeared, these cats were then crossed with purebred Ocicats and Egyptian Maus.

The typical Bengal is a large, robust, and muscular cat with the head usually being smaller in proportion to its body.  Its coat is thick and luxuriant with a silky texture, feeling like a wild cat's pelt.  Bengals are athletic, friendly, loving, alert, curious, and intelligent by nature.  They generally have little fear of anything, and most notably, have no fear of water.  They in fact enjoy playing with it, as well as with toys, which many love playing a game of fetch or tug-of-war with.  The breed is also known for its extreme jumping abilities and its love of heights, both inherited from the ALC.  While Bengals will love all members of the family, they tend to form a strong bond with just one person.  They are extremely interested in everything their owners do, and they love nothing more than playing and interacting with their people.  Bengals are sometimes referred to as the "Border Collie of the cat world" due to their high energy and intelligence, as well as their dog-like temperament.

Bengals have a strong desire and need to be with their human companions and should not be left alone for long periods of time.  Like the Border Collie, this breed is not for everyone, as they require plenty of daily attention and training, and their high energy and inquisitiveness can sometimes be too much for owners to handle.  Bengals are a very social and active breed, and they need plenty of daily physical and mental stimulation.  When given the proper training and attention however, Bengals make extremely loyal and loving companions for life.  Be sure to do your research before aquiring a Bengal.
If after researching the Bengal you decide that it is the breed for you, be sure to only purchase one from a reputable breeder.
